I think it’s because it embodies not just\njoy, but also pleasure,\nsatisfaction, and happiness too. It’s a precision word choice, one that evokes a\nspecific connotation when called to mind, a word whose meaning\nisn’t flattened like \u201chappy\u201d or, really \u201cjoy\u201d can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
I don’t use the word much in my writing. I did a search of my files, and it’s only\nbeen used in AJ’s Serendipity<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/em>\nand Be Mine<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/em>,\nand AJ in AJ’s Serendipity<\/strong><\/em> uses it\nfrequently when referring to his love Samara. An example is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAll of you is beautiful,\u201d AJ said quietly. \u201cI\u2019ve had a hell of a time trying to keep my hands in respectable places as it is.\u201d<\/p> [Samara’s] cheeks reddened even as a smile stretched her lips. \u201cAJ.\u201d<\/p> \u201cSeriously,\u201d he said, smiling a little. \u201cYou are a delight<\/strong> that I want to savor.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n I think this section gets to the heart of\nwhy I like delight<\/em><\/strong> so much. It’s a sensual word. There is always\na visceral experience involved whenever the word delight is used. Joy can be a\nstate of being, an incredible one at that, but joy can be a passive and active\nexperience. Delight, I think, can only be actively experienced. Even if you’re\nnot directly involved in the delight, there is still a sensory engagement\nwithin you that joy, I don’t think, requires. Think of the following sentence\nconstructions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n For joy to be active, we have to change\nthe word completely to enjoy\u2014<\/em>and even then, enjoy<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/em> <\/em>isn’t a one-to-one\nequivalent to joy<\/em>. Happy<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/em>\nis an adjective, so it will always describe a person, place, or thing. But delight<\/strong><\/em> is dynamic, a multitasker of a\nword that can be whatever you need it to be when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I’m actually glad I don’t hear it so\noften in everyday language. I think English speakers know it is a word that has\na defined role in our lexicon, not to be used unless absolutely required.
